Historical Gems Around Ayvalı Village (Formerly Aravan)
Nestled in the ancient valley of Ayvalı Village, previously known as Aravan during the Hittite era (circa 1600 BC), lies Gamirasu, a serene retreat surrounded by rich history and breathtaking landscapes. Located 10 kilometers south of Ürgüp, Ayvalı offers a peaceful escape, accessible via the road to Mustafapaşa. Along the way, after crossing the first bridge, turn right following the yellow signs toward Mazıköy Roman Tombs and Ayvalı Village (often misspelled as Ayvalık). This scenic route features spectacular geological formations, inviting visitors to uncover its historical wonders.
Historical Monuments
According to archaeologist Kemal Talih Türkmen (1949–1995), this road dates back to prehistoric times, as detailed in his work Urgup, Bilinmeyen Kapadokya’dan Bir Kesit (Ankara, 1999). Türkmen uncovered a Stone Age Obsidian Workshop and fragments of ceramics from the Assyrian Colony period (2000–1600 BC), located just 200 meters north of the first bridge. This small hillside has served various purposes over thousands of years, preserving traces of ancient civilizations.
Early Christian Byzantine Heritage
Cross the second bridge, known as Hacı İsmail Deresi Köprüsü, just before reaching Ayvalı Village, and you’ll find a hidden treasure: Early Christian Byzantine cave churches adorned with remarkable frescoes, situated 100 meters south of the bridge. This secluded site, untouched by mass tourism, offers a tranquil space for exploration.
The 12th-century Ayvalı Church, with its stunning frescoes, stands as a testament to Byzantine artistry. Its location, away from the crowds, ensures an intimate and unspoiled experience for those who visit.
İçeridere Valley and Underground City
The İçeridere Valley is home to cave houses, an unexcavated underground city, and natural cave storage areas for apples and potatoes. Some villagers still inhabit these cave homes and extend warm hospitality to the guests of Gamirasu.
The valley also boasts natural springs and a 7-kilometer walking trail, leading to the Golgoli ruins and Damsa Dam Lake, offering panoramic views of Cappadocia. To the west, an astonishing Cappadocian vista awaits, showcasing the region’s unique beauty.
Whether exploring the layers of history, admiring Byzantine frescoes, or walking the scenic trails, Ayvalı Village offers a glimpse into Cappadocia’s rich past and natural splendor, waiting to be discovered.
